Black Hair & Skin Care Guide
As we celebrate Black History Month 2026 and this year's theme, "Honouring Our Communities," we recognise the importance of embracing and celebrating the diverse identities, cultures and lived experiences of the children and young people we support.
Hair and skin are deeply connected to culture, identity, heritage and self-esteem. For many Black children and young people, having their hair and skin cared for appropriately is not simply about appearance, it is about feeling valued, respected and connected to who they are.
This guide has been developed to support carers, professionals and practitioners to better understand the unique hair and skincare needs of Black children and young people. It provides practical advice, resources and tips to help ensure children feel confident, cared for and proud of their identity.
In the spirit of Honouring Our Communities, this guide encourages us to move beyond assumptions, celebrate individuality and ensure that every child's culture and identity are recognised and respected in everyday practice. By taking the time to learn and understand, we can help create a greater sense of belonging and support children and young people to thrive.
Together, let's continue to listen, learn and take meaningful action to ensure all children feel seen, valued and proud of who they are. 🖤
We believe in sharing good practice here is a booklet by Wokingham Bough Council helping cares to care for young people skin and hair.
