Stay Safe Online

Being online can be a great way to stay in touch with friends, play games, learn new things and have fun. But it's important to stay safe and protect yourself when using the internet, social media and online games.

Remember, if something online makes you feel worried, uncomfortable or upset, you don't have to deal with it on your own. Talk to someone you trust, such as your carer, social worker, teacher or another trusted adult.

Things to remember

  • Once you've shared something online, it can be copied and shared by other people.
  • Even if you delete a photo, video or message, someone may already have saved it.
  • People can take screenshots of photos, videos and messages and share them with others.
  • Not everyone online is who they say they are.

Simple rules to help keep you safe

  • Be careful about sharing personal information such as your full name, address, school, email address or phone number.
  • Don't agree to meet someone you've only met online.
  • Check your privacy settings so you can control who sees your photos and posts.
  • If something online makes you feel uncomfortable, tell a trusted adult as soon as possible.
  • Block and report anyone who is being unkind, threatening or making you feel unsafe.
